Scholarships, Grants & Awards
The Department of English offers a range of financial awards to qualified students each year. For some awards, students are required to be majors in English, but for others, they only need demonstrate exceptional ability in a particular area of study.

To recognize the best paper produced in ENGL 102: Writing for a Liberal Education | Students nominated by ENGL 102 faculty |
Three Arts Club of Homeland- CLA |
To recognize excellence in creative writing (fiction and poetry) | Students nominated by creative writing faculty |
Hannah Nathan Rosen Writing Prize |
In memory of English major Hannah Nathan Rosen, the award recognizes excellence in creative non-fiction and fiction. The student who wins will have their piece published in Grub Street, the literary magazine produced in the English department. | Students nominated by creative writing faculty |
Dr. George Hahn Award | To recognize the best paper produced in ENGL 300: Research Methods. | Successful completion ENGL 300 in the previous spring or current fall semester |
Department of English scholarship | To recognize exceptional academic achievement in the academic discipline of English | Students who have demonstrated superior academic achievement in English courses |
W. Frank Guess Scholarship | To recognize excellent students in the areas of writing or womens studies | Sophomore, junior, or senior standing in the writing track. |
Distinguished Presidential Scholarship | To recognize excellence in English majors in junior year | Junior standing and academic excellence |
Dr. Charlotte Koomjohn Scholarship |
To recognize excellence in a student majoring in English | Junior or senior standing (preference to seniors), Literature track, 3.0 minimum GPA, 30 credits in ENGL courses (completed and in-progress) |
Robert M. Ward Scholarship | To recognize excellence in creative writing at the graduate level | Full-time enrollment in M.S. PRWR program, minimum 3.0 GPA |
